Frankfurt based investment group WCM raised its stake in Commerzbank to 5.5% Monday and signalled its intention to increase its holding further to just under 10%.
This unexpected move could signal a fresh battle for control of Germany's third-largest bank. It is only 4 weeks ago that Munich Re increased its stake in the bank to more than 10%.
Merger talks with rival German bank Dresdner failed in 2000 and Commerzbank has been struggling to pursue an independent course ever since.
