Royal Bank On Acquisition Trail

Fresh from integrating the NatWest in 2000 and after only recently completing the $2.2bn purchase of US Mellon Financial Corp., RBS is still in the market for acquisitions.

The group, which reported underlying 2001 profits at just over £5bn Thursday, is believed to be eyeing opportunities on North America.

Fred Goodwin, group chief executive, refused to comment about bid speculation in relation to Allied Irish Banks.
