News of merger talks between two Swiss private banks, Union Bancaire Privee and Discount Bank & Trust Company, is thought likely to signal a wave of mergers between similar institutions in response to increased competition.
Other banks likely to follow suit and look for a tie-up are thought to include Vontobel of Zurich and Basle-based counterpart Bank Sarasin.
