Central Banker Jailed

Sjahril Sabirin, Indonesia's central bank governor, has been jailed for three years after having been found guilty of corruption.

Most commentators thought that Sabirin would be acquitted, but in a surprise verdict he was found to have been involved in a banking scandal that cost the Indonesian government around $90m.

The governor announced his intention to appeal, claiming his innocence. He will remain in his central bank post until further notice.
