The two employees gave statements to federal authorities that indicated that they thought that they were complying with the firm's policy by destroying the documents now believed to be key to interpreting events that led to the bankruptcy of Enron, the former energy giant.
An Andersen spokesman confirmed that it was not the firm's policy to destroy documents just because they appeared to contradict earlier positions taken by the firm.
In an interesting story run by The Wall Street Journal, two of the employees involved in the destruction of Enron related documents at Andersen's Houston office are believed to have advised investigators that they thought they were acting in accordance with the firm's guidelines.
