Andersen Boss Warned About Enron

The Washington Post has reported that a top Enron official advised former Andersen chief Joseph Berardino 12 months ago that the company needed more help with complex financial transactions they were undertaking.

It transpired that Berardino traveled to Houston in February 2001 and met with Richard Causey, the Enron chief accounting officer and himself a former Andersen employee. Causey apparently asked that Andersen provide more support to the company.

The meeting with Causey came just two weeks after a high-level meeting at Andersen when the accounting firm debated whether it should resign as auditor to Enron because of the risks involved with the company's off-the-book partnership deals. Andersen stayed. Berardino apparently did not mention his concerns to Causey and the rest is history. Andersen anticipated fees of up to $100m from Enron in 2001.

Berardino did, however, send two senior partners to establish what further help the company required.
