Lloyds To Pay Out Billions

Lloyd's of London have released a statement which confirms that the insurer is facing the biggest single payout in its 300 year history, following the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in the United States last September.

Lloyd's has deposited in excess of £3.5bn in US trusts to settle claims arising from the attacks. So far it has received around 3,200 claims as a result of the disaster.

The funds were transferred to America on the orders of US regulators. Lloyd's estimate that its net exposure, after claiming back money from reinsurers, will be around £1.9bn.

Analysts expect that the total payout by insurers as a result of the attacks will exceed $50bn.
