Deutsche Conquers Europe

Merger activity and flotations have collapsed to their lowest levels for a decade and, across Europe, the value of takeovers was less than half in the first quarter this year than the same period last year. German bank Deutsche topped the list of European mergers and acquisition advisers for the period January - March 2002.

The investment bank advised on 21 transactions totalling £28.4bn, according to figures produced by monitoring agency Mergermarket.

In total, there were only 445 M & A deals in the first quarter, compared to 707 in the same period last year.
