New Inquiry Sought Into Enron

The New York Times reports that the US Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) is calling for a further investigation into failed energy giant Enron to establish whether the company misrepresented its position when it obtained over '$1bn in taxpayer-backed financing and insurance for international projects'.

The agency has now asked the Justice Department to examine the situation as it claims that had it known of the true nature of Enron's financial position when applications were made in the 1990's it would not have underwritten loan and insurance deals for the company.

The agency is believed to have around $454m in loans and $205m in insurance exposure to the corporation.
