Enron Suicide Note Published

posted: 10 years ago

Clifford Baxter was a senior Enron executive. He left home on 21 January and shot himself dead in his car. His suicide note has now been published.

Baxter, 43, shot himself in the head.

The note to his wife, Carol, made no mention of Enron.

'I am so sorry for this. I feel I just can't go on,' the note read.

'I've always tried to do the right thing, but where there was once great pride, now its gone...the pain is overwhelming.'

Mr Baxter resigned from Enron last May, some six months prior to the company filing for bankruptcy. It has been reported that he clashed repeatedly with Jeff Skilling, the former Enron chief executive, as Baxter objected to the manner in which the true nature of the company debt was hidden away in 'shell' companies.

Enron 'whistle-blower', Sherron Watkins, has described Baxter as a man of 'the utmost integrity' and has stated that she 'respected him immensely.'
