16 former executives of the bank stand accused of misappropriating around $200m during the last 13 years. The money was allegedly used to bribe business leaders and pay-off terrorists.
The 46 year old judge has a reputation for being tough and a thorough investigation is now expected. Garzon is an investigating magistrate who is empowered to collect evidence, order arrests and interrogate suspects.
Bank Faces Long And Public Probe
Spanish Judge Baltasar Garzon has been asked to lead the probe into alleged misappropriation of funds at Spanish bank Banco Bilbao Vizcaya.
