Andersen Plan Rejected

The New York Times has reported that US government prosecutors have now rejected the latest proposal by Arthur Andersen that would have deferred the prosecution of the troubled audit firm.

The firm had proposed that it would admit wrongdoing for its part in the Enron scandal, but is believed to have declined to make other concessions demanded by the authorities.

As a result the firm looks almost certain to go to trail on obstruction of justice charges.

The trial is due to start on May 6th.

Andersen has said all along that it would be unacceptable for the firm to be placed on probation as many state accounting boards would not permit the firm to operate in their states under such circumstances.

The US Justice Department, however, is thought to continue to demand a probationary period as a minimum for agreeing to defer the prosecution of the auditor.
