Barclays Unit Probed

Reuters has reported that the French division of Barclays Bank has been placed under investigation by a Paris magistrate in connection with an inquiry into allegations of money laundering.

It is believed that the investigation is focusing on the activities of various cultural, social and charitable associations.

Barclays has confirmed that it continues to take 'rigorous measures....to fight money laundering' in France.

In a related story, Matt Barrett, the Barclays CEO, has told a group of shareholders at the bank's annual meeting that 'all major business groupings in Barclays have contributed to a solid start to the year.'
