Deutsche And Dresdner Merge Operations

German daily newspaper BoersenZeitung has reported that Dresdner Bank and Deutsche have signed a letter of intent to merge their payment transaction banking operations in a bid to cut costs.

The paper said that they are close to signing off on a joint deal, which could be operational as early as next year. The paper quotes sources who confirmed that the discussions are still at a 'very early stage' and are based exclusively on transaction banking operations and do not relate to securities clearing.

Negotiations for a similar tie-up between the two banks and Commerzbank collapsed in February. It is believed that the venture may well be receptive to other banks coming aboard.
