The announcement follows recent rumours that have linked the exchange with Nasdaq, the New York-based technology market and Germany's Deutsche Boerse.
The LSE was forced to make a statement following the recent run-up in its share price.
Earlier plans to merge with Deutsche Boerse collapsed after the LSE was forced to defend itself from a hostile bid from Sweden's OM Group.
