BNP Paribas On Acquisition Trail

France's biggest bank, BNP Paribas, has announced that it plans to spend as much as $8.3bn to make acquisitions in the US and to strengthen its fund management capability in Europe.

Bloomberg reports that Chairman Michel Pebereau has spent more than $11bn on takeovers since 1999, yet remains adamant that further acquisitions are on the way.

He said: 'I'm more enthusiastic about further purchases in the US, where there are plenty of small retail banks to acquire, than about buying something big in Europe.'

The company is also planning to spend at least 1.3bn euros to buy back stock.
