Merrill Hires Top Man

Reuters reports that Merrill Lynch has appointed Stuart Graham from JP Morgan to head up its pan-European equity banking research operation.

Graham was ranked 11th by fun managers in a Reuters Tempest European survey of analysts in 2001, but companies ranked him higher at number four. His former company, JP Morgan, was ranked third by fund managers and second by companies, much higher than his new firm.

Previously at the Bank of England and James Capel, Graham is a specialist in German banks.
The move will no doubt be seen as a feather in Merrill's cap at a time when its research capability has been badly damaged by allegations of bias. The firm recently agreed to pay $100m to settle the charges.
