Merrill Victor Takes On Spam Co

The Guardian reports that New York state attorney general Eliot Spitzer, fresh from his triumph in the Merrill Lynch 'overly optimistic' research case, is now taking on an internet firm accused of swamping over 500 million e-mail users with unwanted advertisments.

Spitzer has now filed suit against MonsterHut, an internet advertising firm, accusing it of fraudulently advising clients that it would only send e-mails to users who had agreed to receive them.

The attorney general has said that over 750,000 people have asked for their names to be deleted from receiving the mails and tens of thousands had complained to Pae Tec, MonsterHut's internet service provider.

Several US states are or have already introduced legislation which specifically targets spammers. In California, all unsolicited mail must carry opt-out instructions.
