CSFB Acted 'Responsibly' Over Enron

The Houston Chronicle reports that Credit Suisse boss Lukas Muehlemann has said that its investment bank subsidiary CSFB behaved in a responsible and appropriate way in all the work it undertook for failed energy giant Enron.

Although CSFB is one of nine investment banks named in two lawsuits filed against Enron in Texas, the Credit Suisse chief executive insisted that the investment bank committed no wrong-doing and acted professionally 'based on the information available at the time.' He also claimed that the bank never had 'a complete overview of (Enron's) financial activities.'

The lawsuits allege that the banks' knowledge of the questionable partnerships gave them an inside view of what was really happening at the corporate and that they should not have sold securities to investors as they were aware of the true nature of Enron's financial position.

CSFB has also been named in a separate $275m lawsuit filed by Alabama's pension fund in respect of the Enron collapse.
