Merrill Pact In Danger

CNN reports that two U.S. states are now questioning New York state attorney general Eliot Spitzer's settlement deal with Merrill Lynch in a move which could threaten the $100m agreement the firm made with state regulators.

Only two U.S. states, Missouri and South Dakota, have so far refused to ratify the agreement and insiders believe that they may be attempting to screw more money from Merrill. Under the terms of the current agreement, New York state would get $48m and the other states would get around $1m each.

It is, however, thought unlikely that Spitzer will go back to Merrill and ask for more.
