Woman Analyst Wins £1.4m Payout

A former securities analyst is to receive a record £1.4m payout after her employer dropped its appeal case against the award made in a sex discrimination tribunal last year.

Julie Bower, 35, won her case last year against Schroder Securities, a unit of Salomon Smith Barney and now part of Citigroup. She was awarded £1.4m after the tribunal ruled that she was the victim of discrimination as she was paid a bonus of only £25,000 in 1999 (later increased to £50,000), while two males collegues undertaking a similar job were paid £650,000 and £440,000.

She was also advised in 1999 that she had the lowest score of any team leader in her annual appraisal when, in fact, she came 37th out of 68.

She left the firm claiming that senior staff were trying to ruin her career.

In making the award the tribunal compensated Bower for salary, bonuses and other benefits that would have accrued to her.

It has now been confirmed that Bower's previous employer will drop its planned appeal.

A spokesman for Citigroup confirmed that the firm denied any wrongdoing, but mentioned that the financial services giant just wanted to move on.
