Sacked Compliance Man May Be Vindicated

The Wall Street Journal reports that a rules compliance officer at former brokerage firm Donaldson Lufkin and Jenrette (DLJ) claims he was sacked for blowing the whistle on a broker. The broker was subsequently charged by the US Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC) for allegedly stealing from clients.

Joseph Mulder claims he was fired by DLJ in 1991 after he compiled a report in September 1990 accusing R.Christopher Hanna, a broker in the firm's Miami office, of wrong-doing. Mulder, 59, had decades of experience and and had previously identified two money launderers who were later sent to prison.

The New York Times has now reported that Hanna was charged in February by the SEC for allegedly stealing $3.2m from clients.

Mulder sued DLJ after his dismissal and won a $114,000 settlement. Credit Suisse First Boston, which bought DLJ two years ago, has denied that Mulder's firing had anything to do with his report on Hanna.
