SEC Boss In Jail Warning To CEOs

The Financial Times reports that The US Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC) has threatened that CEOs running public companies face jail if their companies' financial accounts prove to be inaccurate.

SEC chairman, Harvey Pitt, has confirmed that the regulator will be writing to the 1,000 largest US companies asking that their CEOs and chief financial officers certify the accuracy of their previously filed accounts.

Senior executives will be personally accountable and, should a declaration subsequently prove to be false, the executives would 'go to jail'.

Pitt has acted in order to attempt to shore-up US investor confidence, which is at an all-time low following a number of high-profile fraud and mismanagement cases.
