British Bankers Charged Over Enron

The Guardian reports that the US Justice Department is believed to be looking into two British banks as part of its investigation into failed energy giant Enron.

The US government is examining two of the complex partnership arrangements, Chewco and Southampton, that helped bring down the company. The financing for the Chewco partnership was provided by Barclays.

According to the Times, the Justice Department has now charged three former Greenwich Natwest employees, alleging that they secretly invested in Southampton and claiming that they siphoned off $7.3m in income that rightfully belonged to their employer.

Both Barclays and The Royal Bank are expected to fully cooperate with US government officials and regulators.
