Kathryn Bigelow plans black ops tale before braving Triple Frontier

Kathryn Bigelow plans black ops tale before braving Triple FrontierThis year's Oscar winner for best director, Kathryn Bigelow, is to shoot a low-budget thriller before starting work on her next major project, Variety reports.

Bigelow has been putting together Triple Frontier, a large-scale project set in the titular border region between Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil. Tom Hanks has already joined the cast and there have been suggestions that Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio and Will Smith could also be involved.

However, the difficulty of hammering out contracts with A-list stars may explain why Bigelow and Mark Boal, writer of The Hurt Locker, are likely to shoot the other film first. Variety reports that the untitled project concerns a black ops operation and is based on a real-life story that appeared in printed form. It is said to be similar in approach to The Hurt Locker, which was shot "guerrilla style" for just $10m in Jordan, close to the country's border with Iraq, and went on to win six Oscars.

Bigelow and Boal are currently seeking financing for the project, with the aim of shooting it before Triple Frontier's projected autumn 2011 start date.
