The Tourist – review

posted: 3 years ago

The Tourist – reviewA Hitchcockian comedy-thriller co-scripted by the German director of The Lives of Others, the American author of The Usual Suspects and the Englishman who wrote Gosford Park, all three of them Oscar-winners, seemed like something to look forward to. Especially for someone like myself who believes that no film set on a train or in Venice can be wholly bad. But this glossy affair, in which Angelina Jolie (British mystery woman) meets Johnny Depp (American maths teacher) on a train from Paris to Venice, then leads him on a merry dance around the canals of La Serenissima chased by Scotland Yard and international villains, nearly pulls off the trick.

Five of the Best

Things we love, things we want, things we want to do, and things we think are just cool, interesting, or at least noteworthy.

  1. Here's a good rule to live by: If you have to ask yourself if something is OK to do, it's probably not.
  2. Classical sculptures with clothes on. They're hip and they're way cooler than us.
  3. All hail, Stevie Nicks! If you like her, you'll want to read this. (And come on, who doesn't like her?)
  4. Take a trip down memory lane, checking out the Withnail & I: The End photography exhibition from Proud Camden, which begins late June.
  5. We can't warm up to the idea that the International Herald Tribune will be renamed the International New York Times this autumn.
