Bonking Banker Banged Up In Dubai

Unknown In Jail

Now here's a cautionary tale.

It all apparently started just before Christmas, after then Dubai-based HSBC real estate analyst Toby Carroll, 31, split up with his Brazilian girlfriend, Ferreira Gomez.

The day after the break-up Carroll was said to have been discovered in bed with another (British) woman, Danielle Spencer, by his ex - and the ex wasn't very happy, allegedly causing a right old fuss and slashing some furniture and fittings in Carroll's flat.

Ms Spencer apparently legged it and locked herself in the bathroom, but Ms Gomez allegedly followed and tried to gain entry with the knife.

Carroll is said to have become concerned, and called the local police, who arrived and promptly arrested all three (the ex initially for criminal damage, and the amorous couple on suspicion of having sex outside of marriage - which is illegal in Dubai).

The three foreigners then spent the next 30 days in the notorious Bur Dubai police station cells, before being bailed.

Fast-forward to last week, and the three 'amigos' were back in court in Dubai. Ms Gomez and Ms Spencer (who are apparently now the very best of friends) received one month jail terms for engaging in sex outside marriage, while Carroll got a 2-month sentence (one month for each relationship).

The Sun newspaper quotes a local 'court source', who said: It's another example of Westerners failing to respect our Muslim laws. Bed-hopping may be accepted in the UK, but it is illegal here'.

One banker told Here Is The City: 'Dubai usually operates a 'don't ask, don't tell policy' on this kind of thing, and it (sex outside of marriage) goes on all the time over there among foreigners. In this case, the police were called to an incident, and the authorities clearly thought they had no alternative but to act. Mr Carroll and the two young ladies were just incredibly unlucky'.
