Vin Diesel And The Rock In Fast Five

It was impossible not to get drunk whilst watching this film on DVD. In mean, really, it sort of made me feel like a bad-ass, watching all of these dudes and their fast cars. And there was even a token girl, to make me think that such a life was possible, if only I had the...driving skills.

But I don't, and so on Friday night, looking for escapist film, my husband and I rented Fast & Furious 5 from iTunes.

Back in 2001, when Fast & Furious came out, I was living in New York City. My attached-at-the-hip best friend and I went to see this with her super cool boyfriend and his friends, whose opinions we rated very highly. (For example, they were rockers who talked about how Christina could out-sing Britney, and this somehow gave them credibility with us.) Anyway, they touted this as quality silliness, and they were right. It was definitely silly.

Eleven years and three unseen films later, it wasn't hard to catch up. Paul Walker's character is in a relationship with Vin Diesel's character's sister (played by Jordana Brewster), and they're using fast cars to break Vin Diesel out of prison. They all escape, and head to Rio to hide out.

Fast Five features Dwayne Johnson, better known as WWF wrestler, The Rock, who is great as the American FBI hard-ass sent to Rio to track down our criminals. ("Above all else, we don't ever, ever let them get in the cars." Awesome!)

Of course he doesn't get them, and of course they get involved in some criminal activity that yields them lots of cash, and of course they get away unscathed. And, well, a few other things happen that I can't really remember. Actually, a lot of things happen. I just checked the ending on The Movie Spoiler site and got confused. Suffice to say they end up in some new exotic location with really expensive cars.

The last moment of the film delivers a cliff-hanger that involves a character from the second film (Michelle Rodriguez, former love interest of Diesel's character, who supposedly died in a previous film), so we can be sure there will be a Furiously Fast Six.

I'll be selecting a great vintage to celebrate.

Fast F& Furious 5 is now available on DVD.

Five of the Best

Things we love, things we want, things we want to do, and things we think are just cool, interesting, or at least noteworthy.

  1. An idea for your next rendezvous in Paris (or crazy weekend with friends): a private cruise in a motorboat for three hours of Champagne-fueled romance (or fun).
  2. While we are rarely ones to turn down a charitable opportunity, how about taking that pile of spring cleaning cast-offs to a car boot sale? We're pretty sure you could get a new handbag out of the proceeds...
  3. We're loving this bold, striped tie from Paul Stuart. The meek need not click.
  4. The coolest personalised cufflinks around are these. They include words, names or places, which run off the surface creating a rather ambiguous stream of letters. (And let's face it: a bit of mystery never hurt anyone.)
  5. We're carnivores who love a deal, so we'll be printing out this voucher, then visiting Giraffe for 2-for-1 vegetarian entrees during National Vegetarian Week (21-25 May).
