Samuel, who will take up the role from 30 January, has more than 35 years experience in investment banking, most recently as Vice Chairman of Lazard & Co.

Samuel started his career at Coopers & Lybrand qualifying as a chartered accountant followed by a number of senior positions at Citigroup, formally Schroders plc and Schroders Salomon Smith Barney, before joining Lazard & Co as Vice Chairman in 2003. He also holds various director and non-executive director positions and is an honorary trustee of International Alert, a charitable peace building organisation.
The FSA regulates the financial services industry and has four objectives under the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000: maintaining market confidence; contributing to the protection and enhancement of stability of the UK financial system; securing the appropriate degree of protection for consumers; and reducing financial crime.
