The Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation is the title charity and benefitting sponsor. 100 runners hope to raise over $325,000 at the event, each pledging to raise a minimum of $2500. Fifteen corporate teams from mostly Wall Street companies, including Goldman, Morgan Stanley, JP Morgan, Citi, SAC Capital, Barclays Capital, Wells Fargo and Credit Suisse, will take part.
Last year’s winner was Brian Kuritzky, of Goldman Sachs, who finished the race in 13:38. This fast time qualified him for the 'Invitational Field' of 22 runners who will be competing in the main event – the elite runners who are 'tower champs' from around the world who come to this event for bragging rights. This field includes six-time champ Thomas Dold of Germany, who has won the race 6 times in a row, finishing last year in 10:10.
The Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation is the world’s largest private funder of myeloma research. Multiple myeloma is at this time a terminal blood cancer with one of the worst survival rates of any cancer.
Since its inception in 1998, the MMRF has raised over $195m, 90% of which is budgeted for myeloma research. The treatments developed are being used in treating 30 other cancers.
