Also interesting, was some of the commentary. This article by a Manhattan agency head talks about what makes Super Bowl ads work, and what used to work but doesn't now. (Let us now pay homage to the original Wassup Budweiser ad. And while we're at it, let's remember our favourite two ads from last year: VW's The Force, and Eminem's Imported From Detroit.)
This year, Chrysler scores again with another two-minute version, this time featuring Clint Eastwood. Cynical as you maybe, you can't help but find it somewhat moving. (OK, I got chills, but I'm easy.)
More fun was the Budweiser Rescue Dog, Weego, who gets beers for everyone who says "Here, Weego." Also cute was the exercising Volkswagen dog, but really that ad was only good because of the Darth Vader appearance at the end.
We've already discussed Ferris Bueller. And as a friend said tonight, "Really? Did Ferris Bueller's life not turn out cooler?" And we're not so sure about Audi's Vampire Party ad. We know we're their target audience (we who grew up listening to Echo & The Bunnymen), but it took two viewings to seem a little funny. Quirky, for sure.
USA Today (who else?) has a rate-the-ad feature, which lets you click on any one of the videos for easy viewing. Weego is in the top spot, and Doritos currently has 2 (Man's Best Friend) and 3 (Sling Baby). There are enough commercials to keep you busy all morning, so you'd better get started now.
