From Dallas to DirectTV

posted: 1 year ago

A Palace In Texas

It all started innocently enough: "Check out this hilariously crazy $56m pad outside Dallas, selling for $10m."

The specs:

  • 48K square feet (woha!)
  • The tennis court is blue and purple (and interestingly, the dining room chairs are also purple)
  • The outdoor space is epic (and gosh, Texas looks idyllic)
  • The indoor pool is beautiful (the kitchen not so much)
  • The house has a bowling alley (but terrible taste in rugs)

Then I clicked on one of the comments: "This dude bought the place." (Actually, don't click - the ad isn't that funny.)

But this ad led us to these other DirectTV ads that are kind of crass, and kind of funny.

Don't Re-enact Scenes From Platoon With Charlie Sheen

Don't Have A Grandson With A Dog Collar

Stop Taking in Stray Animals

Don't Wake Up in a Roadside Ditch

But they're also kind of weird. Is this what's wrong with US advertising today?

Five of the Best

Things we love, things we want, things we want to do, and things we think are just cool, interesting, or at least noteworthy.

  1. Here's a good rule to live by: If you have to ask yourself if something is OK to do, it's probably not.
  2. Classical sculptures with clothes on. They're hip and they're way cooler than us.
  3. All hail, Stevie Nicks! If you like her, you'll want to read this. (And come on, who doesn't like her?)
  4. Take a trip down memory lane, checking out the Withnail & I: The End photography exhibition from Proud Camden, which begins late June.
  5. We can't warm up to the idea that the International Herald Tribune will be renamed the International New York Times this autumn.
