Bring the Beach Inside

posted: 1 year ago

Heavens no, I don't mean the sand from your last jaunt to Spain. (Although the seashells from your trip to Florida's Gulf Coast look nice in that jar on your bookshelf.) I'm talking about palm trees. Inside your house.

Let us glean some inspiration from the Winter Garden in the Atrium of The Landmark London Hotel. Don't you kind of want to live here?

Landmark Atrium

You can! (Sort of). All you have to do is find a good, sunny place in your home for a palm tree, and based on that, decide on tall and slim or short and stout, then go to your nearest garden centre and buy one. Then you have to find a good-looking urn in which it will sit. We'd recommend scouring antique markets for something cool, rather than buying something new. For example any one of these would look great: cast-iron Americana, Chinese hand-painted, vintage Moroccan.

Three Planters

After that, you simply give your palm a name (optional), and water it once a week (and not more). And that's it! You've brought the tropics into your home. Room service, alas, is not included.

Five of the Best

Things we love, things we want, things we want to do, and things we think are just cool, interesting, or at least noteworthy.

  1. If you wish you lived in a luxurious, hip barns like we do, then you'll want to click here to find out about renting one for a self-catering holiday.
  2. We haven't exactly fact-checked this Abercrombie & Fitch slam, but we're certainly open to it (and think you should be, too).
  3. Yes, you fine young thing, this pop up supper club at the Sanderson is exactly where you need to be dining on the weekends in May and June.
  4. Hold on tight, folks: 24 is returning as a 12-part mini-series next summer.
  5. We might tire of this chandelier after one night, but no doubt, it would be an interesting night.
