With the news that Chelsea are on the verge of bringing in Wigan forward Victor Moses and Marseille’s full back Cesar Azpilicueta you begin to wonder how much more spending will be incurred at The Bridge this summer. In that respect it may seem the clearest indicator yet that Chelsea are willing to give Fernando Torres another chance at the centre forward spot this season.
Since his move from Liverpool; Torres has failed to live up to his expectation, price tag or indeed ability but with the departure of Didier Drogba this summer he is undoubtedly the number one striker at the club.
After a successful summer with Spain at the European Championships, where he was awarded the Golden Boot for top scorer I think this season could be his breakout season in blue. He didn’t achieve much playing time in Poland and Ukraine but when he did he looked dangerous. Constantly testing opposition offside traps with his breaking and bending runs and despite occasionally missing the target his confidence seemed to return and he found that composed finishing that had escaped him.
After being used as a bench warmer or winger recently there doesn’t seem to be much chance of that happening now for the Spaniard. With the arrival of Marko Marin, Oscar and now potentially Moses; Chelsea have a wealth of talent in the wide positions. Hazard may be a threat as he likes to play the ‘Messi’ position but this being his freshman year in the Premier League he will most likely be used from wide or deeper in midfield.
With all these players and Spanish team-mate Juan Mata and Frank Lampard providing the ammunition all Torres will have to do is put the ball in the back of the net, a skill that once came so easily but seemed to escape him in the last 18 months.
However he seems confident, in interviews since the Euro’s he has appeared positive and genuinely upbeat about his career at Stamford Bridge.
I would not be surprised to see him back on scoring form this year as I predict big things for Chelsea FC, resurgent under Di Matteo and with a fresh influx of talent we may see Fernando Torres scoring 15, 20, 25 or maybe more goals in 2012-13.
What do you think; will Torres finally shine for Chelsea this season?
