Three Dead, Including Gunman, in New Jersey Store Shooting

Bloomberg reports that police were called around 4:30 a.m. after shots were fired inside a Pathmark store, where workers were stocking shelves. The gunman and victims worked at the store and are from Old Bridge, a township of about 65,000 people about 40 miles (64 kilometers) southwest of New York City, Mayor Owen Henry said in a telephone interview.

The shooter, an ex-Marine, had been employed at the store for about two weeks, Henry said. After showing up for work, he left the market and returned in military fatigues with an AK-47 rifle and an automatic pistol, shot the two victims and then himself, Henry said. The motive isn’t clear, Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan told reporters at the scene.

'This is every mayor’s nightmare', said Henry, who took office in January.

The victims were an 18-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man, Kaplan said. Their identities, and that of the shooter, won’t be disclosed until the families are notified, he said.
