Nicklas Bendtner has finally got his move away from Arsenal this summer as he signs for Italian champions Juventus.
The one thing that springs to your mind immediately is just who exactly is the Dane’s agent and where can I get his number after tying down such an impressive deal for the striker, perhaps the same man who earned West Ham flop Julien Faubert a similar deal at Real Madrid not so many seasons ago.
It also makes you wonder about how the confidence of the man who reportedly scored off the radar totals in a confidence test at The Emirates has been affected by the deal.
The best way of trying to figure out which ‘choice’ Nicklas was is to go through each of the players Juve had approached before eventually ‘settling’ for a loan deal for one of Arsenal’s forgotten men.
First of all there is of course Robin Van Persie, Juve had real high hopes of signing the Dutchman who eventually moved to Manchester United and at that time I am sure the Old Lady hierarchy did not imagine they would be signing his then team-mate to help lead their line this season.
Then there was Edison Cavani of Napoli, he himself quickly put distance between a potential move as did Napoli by suggesting a ludicrous buying price. So next option Stevan Jovetic, but Fiorentina stood firm and refused to sell. After that they felt a need to pursue Spanish striker Fernando Llorente but were priced out of that deal almost immediately. Even then a last ditch attempt to steal Dimitar Berbatov away from Fiorentina failed, as Fulham stole in to keep the enigmatic Bulgarian in the Premier League (thankfully).
So that makes Nicklas Juve’s 6th choice; it is the equivalent of being told all the main courses are off the menu bar one, and you’ll have to settle for that. Yeah it will do, and will certainly fill the void, but you wanted to fill it with something a little more special. If you are eating out you may as well be extravagant.
But kudos to Bendtner; who blocked himself from moves to Celta Vigo and Galatasaray, backing his ability to shine through the hot air often surrounding him.
He had a good Euro 2012 and has always played well internationally and despite the common message board and forum disdain I actually quite like him. He is a bit fresh for some but his heart on his sleeve behavior and demeanor is applaudable in this modern day age of fake modesty and bum patting.
Juve may not have wanted him and elements of luck have certainly played their part in Bendtner’s deal but you make your own luck and Nicklas will be determined to prove many people wrong in Serie A.
Will Bendtner be a success in Italy?
