Liverpool did make a late bid to sign Italian legend Alessandro Del Piero on a free transfer. The former Juve talisman reportedly rejected the potential move to Anfield as well as a deal with newly promoted Southampton in order to move down under with A-League side Sydney FC. Liverpool are in desperate need of a new striker and a short term deal for the forward would have been a marquee signing to help appease growing unrest on Merseyside. However the lure of being the leagues star and of living in Australia appears to have swayed Del Piero to playing in Sydney.
Meanwhile Liverpool could still face action for tapping up Clint Dempsey from Fulham, despite the American forward eventually joining Tottenham Hotspur in a dramatic deadline day deal. Fulham are believed to be more then upset about the pursuit of their star player and the manner in which Liverpool made their intentions so publicly clear, even at one point declaring he had signed for the club extremely prematurely. The controversy over the deal is even believed to have played a large part in the decision of where Clint would go as Fulham requested a larger sum from Liverpool then they did Spurs. The Premier League confirmed a complaint had been lodged.
Liverpool have announced their Europa League squad for the upcoming season with few surprises included in the 30 man lineup. Peter Gulacsi is named as 3rd choice goalkeeper perhaps finally confirming the departure of the AWOL Brazilian Doni. Youngsters form a large part of the squad with Ryan McLaughlin, Jack Robinson, Jonathan Flanagan, Samed Yesil, Adam Morgan all included. Raheem Sterling also gets a callup as do Spanish youngsters Dani Pacheco and Suso.
There is positive news on the injury front as Liverpool wingers Joe Cole and Oussama Assaidi appear to be close to a return to action. Joe Cole is on the mend from a hamstring injury picked up minutes into the opening day of his season and Assaidi is recovering from an old groin injury. However both are now on the mend and Rodgers hopes they will be back to action after the international break.
It has emerged that Liverpool reportedly rejected the chance to take Brazilian international striker Leandro Damiao on loan. The Tottenham target failed to agree a deal at The Lane and his Brazilian club then offered Liverpool the chance to take him on a season loan with an option to buy. According to the Daily Mail; Liverpool considered the deal to be too expensive and rejected the opportunity.
