1. 1666 - The Great Fire of London is finally put out

2. 1901 - President McKinley is shot and fatally wounded in Buffalo, New York by an anarchist named Leon Czolgosz

3. 1915 - A prototype tank nicknamed Little Willie rolls off the assembly line in England. The British developed the tank in response to the trench warfare of World War I.

4. 1941 - Jews are ordered to wear the Yellow Star of David in Germany

5. 1943 - A new high-speed train traveling between New York City and Washington, D.C., derails killing 79 people

6. 1966 - South Africa Prime Minister Hendrik Verwoerd is stabbed to death during a parliamentary meeting in Cape Town

7. 1970 - Four New York-bound airliners are hijacked over western Europe in an operation carried out by a militant Palestinian group

8. 1976 – Soviet air force pilot Lt. Viktor Belenko lands a MiG-25 jet fighter in Japan and requests political asylum in the United States

9. 1988 - 11 year old Thomas Gregory becomes the youngest person to swim the English channel, taking nearly 12 hours

10. 1997 - Princess Diana's funeral is held

11. 2007 - Luciano Pavarotti dies
