There are injury concerns over Robin Van Persie and Shinji Kagawa heading into Manchester United’s match with Wigan on Saturday. Both players picked up injuries whilst on international duty and add to a growing list of injury concerns for United. Kagawa felt discomfort in his back, which has been a recurring problem throughout his career, and Van Persie was taken off at half time during the Netherlands’ win over Hungary owing to a thigh problem. Kagawa has been sent for scans on his back and medical staff will continue to assess Robin Van Persie but both seem unlikely to start the game against Wigan when considering their Champions League opener against Galatasaray will follow a few days later.
Former United midfielder Nicky Butt believes Tom Cleverley needs a full season of regular, competitive football to further his progress. Cleverley, playing in an attacking midfield position, impressed for England against Moldova but was unable to replicate his performance in the 1-1 draw against Ukraine and Butt claims that Cleverley will need to get used to playing every week at a high level to develop a consistency in his game.
Anders Lindegaard has revealed the nature of his relationship with fellow goalkeeper David De Gea. Lindegaard, speaking to Red Voices Podcast, believes the professional rivalry between the two ensures manager Sir Alex Ferguson always has a dilemma in choosing a goalkeeper but claimed that he and De Gea remain good friends away from the field. 28-year-old Lindegaard started United’s last league game instead of De Gea but failed to convincingly assume the no.1 spot.
Young United defender Sean McGinty has returned to the club after Oxford United terminated his loan deal. McGinty was initially loaned to the League Two side until January but Oxford United have sent him back to Manchester for reasons they will not disclose.
