NFL latest: Including 49ers and LA Stadium

49ers At Wembley

All the big news from the NFL you need to know.

The San Francisco 49ers are one game away from recording seven regular-season games without committing a turnover and breaking the NFL record. The 49ers offense, led by Alex Smith, only saw 10 turnovers with quarterback Smith only throwing a league-low five interceptions last season. The 49ers come up against the Detroit Lions on Sunday Night Football with both teams recording wins last weekend.

The LA Planning Commission passed a proposal to build a 72,000-seater stadium in downtown Los Angeles that will now be motioned in the City Council in two weeks. This marks progress in establishing a franchise in Los Angeles with stadium developers AEG and the City hoping to convince an owner to move a franchise to LA by next March.

The Green Bay Packers beat the Chicago Bears 23-10 in Thursday Night Football in the NFC North Division match up. Bears running back Matt Forte was forced to leave the game in the third quarter with a right ankle sprain and it is as yet unclear for how long he will be sidelined. The Bears signed Michael Bush in the off-season at the position and he will be expected to take charge of the Bears’ running game in Forte’s absence.

The New York Daily News is reporting that Tim Tebow could request a trade after this season. Tebow joined the New York Jets after former team Denver Broncos picked up Peyton Manning in free agency and believed the Jets would give him the best chance at a starting role. Mark Sanchez has kept hold of the starting quarterback role and unless Tebow can feature more in the offense, he will most likely seek a move to a team that will give him a starting role at QB.

Reports have surfaced on ESPN that preliminary discussions have taken place over a new contract for Tony Romo. Romo’s contract can be voided next year in 2013 but the Cowboys will look to secure the quarterback beyond this year whilst Romo, at the age of 32, will seek one last major contract.
