Why Steven Taylor deserves a chance with England

The Newcastle United centre-back has returned from injury to the club's first team. Paul Moore argues why an England call-up should not be far away.

Steven Taylor is a loyal servant of Newcastle United and to me he is just getting better and better. His reading of the game is second to none and I can’t believe he hasn’t been noticed by England boss Roy Hodgson.

One of the attributes in his armoury is his versatility, he can play anywhere across the back four even if rarely at left back. I bet if he was asked he’d do it he’d look good.

At 26 he’s a good age with Premier League experience and I really think he can make the step up. Hodgson’s defenders are mostly around the 30 mark; maybe Taylor isn’t old enough!

He came close to the international scene in 2007 and was in the squad to face Germany but didn’t get on the field. He has played in the under-21 side as well as the England ’B’ side.

The only concern I have about him is he has had his fair share of injuries. Back in 2009 he was the captain of the under-21 side that got to the European Championships only for a recurring injury to rule him out.

Back in 2008 Taylor asked for a transfer when the club were relegated and I’m surprised none of the big boys picked him up; maybe his injuries played a part in that, perhaps it was Newcastle asking a high price.

But every player wants to feel loved by his club and the London born centre back is no different. He signed a new contract and the love affair continued.

Please don’t get me wrong; Roy Hodgson and his team are doing a solid job at the back I just think that Taylor can add strength to an already strong defence.

Maybe call him up for a friendly and see how he performs; I can’t see it hurting and the experience will do him the world of good.

With the best defenders in the world playing in the Premier League it’s nice to see such a solid one that’s English; let’s hope he can stay injury free.

Do you agree? Does Taylor deserve an England call-up?
