Football has truly become a global sport and the effect on player transfers is obvious. As players like Didier Drogba, Nicolas Anelka, David Beckham and Raul now play all over the world. The first few lines of this article will probably therefore come as a relief to many Newcastle United fans as Emile Heskey is reportedly on the verge of agreeing a deal with Australian side Newcastle United Jets.
While Newcastle United would have been surprised to hear of any strikers arrival with the talents of Demba Ba, Papiss Cisse and Shola Ameobi already available I fear the reason they will be happy not to be introducing Heskey to the club revolves around something less understanding.
That is, because, Emile Heskey really has become the butt of many a joke in English fan-lore in recent times, mainly due to his goal-scoring record, or indeed lack of one.
Yet while his goalscoring record has always been questioned you could never fault his overall quality as a footballer and work ethic for the team. He is strong, fast and occasionally impossible to shake off the ball but do not expect him to start banging in the goals simply because he is in an inferior league.
He has always reminded people that he has never got better or worse as a player throughout his career just the ‘perception of his talent’ changes. He has never been a prolific goal-scorer, but what else he brings to a team is an abundance of effort and assists that the likes of Ryan Griffiths can look forward to latching onto at the Hunter Stadium.
I think we should get behind the striker during his one-year spell in Australia; he joins fellow Englishmen Michael Bridges and Francis Jeffers in turning out for the New South Wales side and it will be a pleasure to hopefully see a smile on the face of a man who brought us this excellent moment for England …
IT'S FIVEEE!!!!
