The Chelsea FC twitter account firstly denied rumors that Mikel closed his twitter account due to racial abuse by fans saying the player wanted to leave the social networking site for a long time.

But later the club confirmed that Mikel had been abused by fellow Chelsea fans and that the club will call for Police investigation and strong actions will be taken against those found guilty.

Mikel who had a disappointing night at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday against Juventus in their opening Champions League game after it was his poor pass that led to Quaglirella finding the back of the net.

Mikel later apologized publicly for his mistake. The 25yr old midfielder tweeted- “If I want to make up an excuse, I can. But, for me, I gave the ball away. I put my hands up, we move on. I’m sorry about the mistake, but there are no excuses.” ‘I’m sorry about the mistake, but there are no excuses.’

This is not the first time that the club fans have come under the limelight. A section of Chelsea fans mocked the 1 minute silence against Liverpool in their FA Cup tie disrespecting the 96 who lost their lives in the Hillsborough tragedy.

This is not the first time a player has been abused on twitter because of his mistake on field. Ashley Cole was in the wrong end of racial abuse after he missed his spot kick for England against Italy in the Euro's.
