The list of youth talent that has been developed at Ajax is endless, the first major powerhouse in youth development names such as Johan Cruyff, Marco van Basten, Dennis Bergkamp, Frank Rijkaard and Wesley Sneijder are amongst the many who have gone on to play football at the highest level so when one of their youth products starts to make a name for himself you know notice must be taken.
However the 18-year-old subject matter of this article is a Dane who spent his formative years with AGF Aarhus and FC Midtjylland, whose graduates include Simon Kjaer, Sune Killerich and Winston Reid.
Viktor Fischer is being touted as ‘better than Van Basten’ a quite extraordinary claim when you consider the talents of the now Heerenveen manager and former AC Milan striker. Before signing for Ajax last summer the potent marksman had gained interest from Chelsea, Manchester City and Inter Milan but chose Ajax on the basis of their historic tradition of youth development.
His goal record at youth international level was quite astonishing. At under-16 level he bagged four goals in 10 games; under-17 level 20 goals in 30 games and so far at Under-19 level three in five appearances; considering he only turned 18 in June it is obvious why so many are getting excited by his talents.
Some of the world’s top clubs are now scouting the youngster and the NextGen Series has really given him a chance to show off his abundance of talent. Indeed he wasted little time in making a mark on his first appearance of the current campaign as he smashed home a hat-trick against Molde in a 5-0 drubbing of the Norwegian outfit. Last season he tied for the Golden Boot with Barcelona’s Jean Marie Dongou on seven goals which included a destructive hat-trick against Liverpool in the semi-finals and a game winning brace against Barcelona at the quarter-final stage.
He was included in the first team photo at Ajax this season and is expected to make the odd appearance here and there for the Frank de Boer’s side; indeed he has made his first team debut in a pre-season friendly with SV Huisen. You guessed it he scored.
Remember the name, Viktor Fischer.
Here he is in action…
