Defender Martin Kelly has revealed he will not play for the club again until the New Year due to injury. Kelly picked up a knee injury during the defeat to Manchester United and scans showed the damage to be worse than first feared. The club is yet to confirm the extent of the injury but the player himself used his Twitter account to release the news.
Liverpool are waiting to hear news over the injury picked up by defender Daniel Agger in the defeat by Manchester United. Agger had to be stretchered off in the build up to United’s winner and the fears are that he has severe medial ligament damage in his left knee. If scans confirm this then Agger will be made to endure a prolonged period on the sidelines.
Ricardo Quaresma could be on his way to Liverpool after he rejected an improved contract offer from his current side Besiktas. Quaresma has already appeared in the Premier League and his ability to play on both wings is something which Brendan Rodgers has reportedly expressed an interest in. Liverpool refused to meet his £7 million price tag over the summer. The Portuguese international is training with the Besiktas youth team and could make the move to Liverpool as early as January.
Midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has apologised for his red card against Manchester United and his resulting reaction but has said there is no way that he was going to pull out of the tackle. Liverpool’s midfield man went into a 50/50 challenge with United defender Jonny Evans and was shown a straight red card as his right foot went over the top of the ball and scraped Evans’ shin. Shelvey then gestured directly at Sir Alex Ferguson as he left the pitch.
Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has told the club’s fans not to panic after their poor start to the Premier League season. Liverpool are currently 18th on the Premier League table but Gerrard has insisted there is cause for optimism. Liverpool have attracted huge praise for the way they played in the defeat to Manchester United as they controlled large parts of the game.
Former Liverpool player Dietmar Hamann has said Liverpool are letting down manager Brendan Rodgers through their failure to win games and pick up points. Liverpool dominated large parts of the match against Manchester United but were not able to hold out for a point with ten men as they lost 2-1. Hamann says the players owe it to the coach to give a little extra to close out important games coming up.
Margaret Aspinall, a campaigner for the truth about Hillsborough, has called for lifetime bans for any fans involved in offensive chanting during the Premier League game between Liverpool and Manchester United. United fans were heard chanting offensive songs after apparently being provoked by a section of Liverpool supporters. Aspinall has said regardless of club allegiance, any fan involved should be banned.
