Arsenal enjoyed a thoroughly productive evening in the League Cup as they dealt Coventry City an unceremonious thrashing during a 6-1 victory. The man of the match was Andrei Arshavin he performed exceptionally despite being in the cold so far this term, as he swaggered behind Olivier Giroud and setup chances at will, winning a penalty, setting up Oxlade-Chamberlain and Miquel whilst also grabbing himself a goal. Olivier Giroud grabbed the opening goal, his first for the club while a double from Theo Walcott, who was also impressive, completed the scoring with the consolation goal for the Sky Blues coming from Callum Ball.
The next round will see them face off against Reading after the Berkshire club defeated QPR in a five-goal-thriller at Loftus Road. A late back-heel from Pavel Pogrebnyak, a former team-mate of Arshavin’s at Zenit, secured their victory and they will welcome Arsenal to the Madejski Stadium on the 30th October 2012.
Arsene Wenger has insisted his Arsenal side are not afraid to spend money as long as they do so in the ‘right way’. The clubs financial situation is expected to be announced this week, with more healthy operating profits and considerable cash reserves but Wenger believes this is testament to their current transfer policy and he insists they will not buy without believing it is in the best interests of the club.
Arsenal’s left-sided operator Andre Santos has been banned from driving for 12 months after admitting driving at speeds of up to 145mph in rush hour traffic. He was caught driving his Maserati in Hertfordshire before being pulled over and arrested close to Arsenal’s training ground. He says he did not realise he was being pursued by officers as his music was playing loudly and he was not paying attention.
Arsenal youngsters Craig Eastmond and Sanchez Watt have both become new Colchester boss Joe Dunne’s latest recruits as they arrived on three-month loan deals. The two 21-year-olds have previously enjoyed several loan spells with Eastmond playing for Wycombe Wanderers and Millwall while Sanchez Watt has played for Southend, Leeds, Sheffield Wednesday and Crawley Town.
Summer target and continued shortlisted player Victor Wanyama is expected to quash speculation about his future by signing a new deal with Celtic this week. The Kenyan is wanted by Arsenal and rivals Manchester United but he has decided to stay at the ‘best club’ in the form of the Glasgow side.
And finally Arsenal’s Costa Rican striker Joel Campbell had a moment to forget after being sent off after just 19 minutes of action for Real Betis. The striker is gaining valuable experience out on loan but was booked twice in quick succession to receive his marching orders in another poor display.
