In recent years Manchester United have put an increased influence on the future in the transfer market recently with Angelo Henriquez, Javier Hernandez, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and David de Gea all of a young age. The Old Trafford side have also made a habit of picking up talented players from Italy with Giussepe Rossi, Federico Macheda and Davide Petrucci as fervent examples and now they are in the hunt for the highly rated Sassuolo forward Domenico Berardi.
United however are not alone in the chase for the player being touted as the ‘next Totti’ because of his ability to score in a variety of ways as Juventus are the other club confirmed to have approached the Serie B outfit about a potential deal.
While the teenager has a contract until 2015, the club would seriously consider allowing him to leave if it was in the interests of both parties and so far this season he has impressed for the club.
He has featured on three occasions and scored a brilliant opening goal against Crotone, controlling the ball delightfully on the outside of the box before rifling home a rasping half-volley beyond the outstretched opposing keeper. It is a goal like that where you can see the comparisons with the Roma legend, other than his build as he appears to have a few inches on Totti in terms of height and with plenty more time to fill out he could become a magnificent physical presence.
He is currently feeling his way into his career, this season making six appearances in total. Four of those have come in Serie B, where he has scored one goal and provided one assist, and he has made two further appearances in the Coppa Italia. The club will no doubt be monitoring this progress going forward.
Manchester United face stern competition for his signature but he may indeed be a new bright spark for the future as the Manchester United careers of Bebe and Macheda appear to be coming to an end.
Here is a video of Berardi’s first career goal against Crotone, about 40 seconds in anyway…
