AFC Best Team – Houston Texans
It’s not only that the Texans have the best record of any AFC team, it’s the manner in which they have gone about dominating any team that has come in their way. Their victories have been by an average of 17.5 points per game, have allowed fewer points than anyone else and scored more than everyone else.
Armed with a solid QB in Matt Schaub, arguably the best running back in Arian Foster and elite wide receiver Andre Johnson, their offense is in good shape, while the defence is performing at a top level.
AFC Surprise Package – San Diego Chargers
Most AFC teams have played to their expected level so far this year, with no team surprising in the way that the Cardinals have in the NFC. However, the San Diego Chargers, who are almost always expected to go deep into the playoffs, were not given a big chance this year but are topping the AFC West. In a weak division that might not amaze many people but they’ve been efficient and will harbour hopes of winning the division and making their presence felt in the playoffs.
AFC Letdown – New York Jets
Yes, the Jets have won two games but they have been against the Bills and Dolphins. The two games they have lost have been by a combined score of 61-10 to the Steelers and 49ers. Mark Sanchez is performing at the worst level of his career, they have lost cornerback and star defender Darrelle Revis to injury and offseason acquisition Tim Tebow has done absolutely nothing.
Only one team has been run on more than the Jets and their offense ranks in the cellar of the AFC.
AFC MVP – Ben Roethlisberger
The two-time Superbowl winner has defied the odds, putting up brilliant numbers despite being given an offensive line with more holes than Swiss cheese. In just three games he has passed for 8 touchdowns with just one interception, completing almost 70% of his passes.
