Placing last season: 25-41 (10th in Eastern Conference)
Key moves: Detroit’s major move came early in the offseason as they traded away former sixth man of the year winner Ben Gordon in a cap-saving move. Gordon was moved to the Bobcats along with a future first-round pick in exchange for Corey Maggette.
Andre Drummond was drafted by the 2004 champions and will fill the center position that Ben Wallace once occupied.
Detroit also signed Terrence Williams who had a promising role as a reserve player in Sacramento last season.
Challenges ahead: Detroit arguably traded away their best player and this is unlikely to be the season that the Pistons make the leap to playoff participants.
The team needs to focus on the development of Drummond and see whether Williams can expand on his mini-breakout season last year.
Giving away a first round pick in order to trade Gordon could deprive the Pistons of the opportunity of a high pick in the draft since they are likely to be a lottery team for at least a year or two.
Reason to be positive: As with most sides that had a high draft pick, the Pistons will be hoping that their man, Drummond, proves to be a success. Freeing up cap space by moving Gordon will also offer the Pistons the opportunity to dip into the free agent market when they see fit.
Prediction: 29-53 (12th in Eastern Conference)
