Mike Ashley infuriated fans last season after he renamed the stadium the Sports Direct Arena but as part of the new shirt sponsorship deal with glorified loan-shark company Wonga.com (the ones with that really irritating bloke on their adverts, or even worse the collection of geriatric waxworks getting up to ridiculous tomfoolery) they also sold the naming rights to the stadium.
In a smart move they haven’t named it the Wonga Arena (even if it does have a certain ring to it) but in an act of endearance to the fans they have re-named it St James Park.
While I never personally stopped calling it by its ‘real’ name the news has gone down a storm on Twitter where it has been trending…
Tom @TomHarland Shrewd move by Wonga to buy naming rights to Newcastle's ground and return it to St James' Park... way to win fans over.
Aysha @ayshardzn Back to St. James' Park for Newcastle. Better.
Scott Richardson @Scrotchidson Newcastle changing their station name to St. James Park. That's weird, going to sound wrong. It'll always be Sports Direct Arena to me
So it seems most fans are happy about the decision, while others seem to wonder if they ever really stopped calling it St James Park anyway.
Clever work by Wonga.com, even if you don’t agree with them morally, they have made a good call on this one.
What are your views on the situation?
